Discovering Pisgah National Forest

A Natural Treasure in North Carolina

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, Pisgah National Forest is one of the oldest and most cherished national forests in the United States. With over 500,000 acres of lush woodlands, rushing waterfalls, scenic trails, and breathtaking views, it's a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, history buffs, and nature lovers alike.

🌲 A Forest with Deep Roots

The roots of Pisgah National Forest run deep—both literally and historically. It was established in 1916, making it one of the very first national forests in the eastern United States. The land originally belonged to the Biltmore Estate, purchased by George W. Vanderbilt in the late 1800s. Vanderbilt hired famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted to design the estate’s forest, and with the help of forester Gifford Pinchot, Pisgah became the site of the first professionally managed forest in America.

After Vanderbilt’s death, his widow sold 86,700 acres to the federal government, forming the heart of what would become Pisgah National Forest. This act was a cornerstone in the American conservation movement.

🥾 Hiking & Trails: Nature at Every Turn

Pisgah boasts hundreds of miles of trails for hikers of all levels. Whether you're looking for a casual stroll or a backcountry challenge, there's a trail waiting for you:

  • Looking Glass Rock Trail – A 6.4-mile round-trip hike leading to a giant granite dome with panoramic mountain views.

  • Graveyard Fields Loop – A popular 3.2-mile hike with waterfalls, wildflowers, and scenic valley views. Great in the summer and fall!

  • Black Balsam Knob – Part of the Art Loeb Trail, this high-elevation hike offers sweeping 360° views and is especially stunning during sunset.

  • Catawba Falls Trail – A moderate 3-mile round trip hike to a stunning multi-tiered waterfall near Old Fort.

💦 Waterfalls, Wildlife, and Wonder

Pisgah is known for its waterfalls, many of which are easily accessible. Sliding Rock is a natural waterslide perfect for a summer thrill, while Looking Glass Falls is a roadside gem that’s picture-perfect year-round. Moore Cove Falls offers a family-friendly hike with the unique experience of walking behind the waterfall.

Wildlife is abundant in Pisgah. Keep an eye out for black bears, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and an array of bird species. Spring and summer bring blooming rhododendrons, mountain laurels, and colorful wildflowers across the forest floor.

🚵‍♀️ More Than Just Hiking

Pisgah is a playground for outdoor recreation:

  • Mountain biking: The forest is a world-class destination, especially around the Bent Creek Experimental Forest and Davidson River areas.

  • Fishing: Home to trout-filled streams like the Davidson River, it's a favorite spot for fly fishing.

  • Camping: Options range from backcountry sites to developed campgrounds like Lake Powhatan, North Mills River, and Davidson River Campground.

  • Rock climbing: Areas like Looking Glass Rock and John Rock offer thrilling vertical adventures for climbers.

  • Scenic drives: The Blue Ridge Parkway cuts through parts of Pisgah, offering breathtaking overlooks, picnic areas, and scenic pull-offs.

🏕️ Places to Explore

Don’t miss:

  • Pisgah Ranger Station & Visitor Center – Near Brevard, it's the perfect starting point with maps, exhibits, and helpful info.

  • Cradle of Forestry in America – A historic site and educational center showcasing the birthplace of forest conservation in the U.S., with trails, exhibits, and guided tours.

  • Mount Pisgah – A prominent peak near Asheville with hiking trails and an observation platform.

🍂 When to Visit

Pisgah is beautiful year-round:

  • Spring brings waterfalls at full flow and wildflowers.

  • Summer is great for camping, swimming, and cooler mountain air.

  • Fall draws leaf-peepers from far and wide for the vibrant foliage.

  • Winter offers peaceful solitude and stunning snow-dusted peaks—just be prepared for icy trails and closures in higher elevations.

Pisgah National Forest is more than just a destination—it's an experience steeped in history, rich in biodiversity, and full of adventure. Whether you're chasing waterfalls, hiking to scenic summits, or simply soaking in the serenity of the woods, Pisgah is a place where memories are made and nature speaks in every rustling leaf.

What’s Happening in Wake County?

USPS Mail Scattered!

On April 7, 2025, a surprising incident caused significant disruption to traffic and mail delivery on Interstate 40 in Durham, North Carolina. A United States Postal Service (USPS) truck, traveling along the highway, lost several crates of mail after the rear door failed to secure properly. The crates, filled with important letters and packages, fell onto the roadway, creating a mess for morning commuters. The spill occurred around 5:45 a.m. near Page Road and mile marker 282, and one of the crates was struck by another vehicle. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The spill caused substantial traffic delays during the rush hour commute. To safely clear the road, authorities closed the right lane and the exit ramp to Page Road for several hours. Durham police and USPS personnel quickly worked together to gather the scattered mail and restore order to the highway. Meanwhile, the postal items, which had been scattered across the lanes, were collected and transported to a USPS processing center for sorting and reprocessing.

Despite the inconvenience, the USPS assured the public that all affected mail would be delivered by the following day, April 8, 2025. The Postal Service thanked local authorities for their swift action in clearing the debris and apologized for the disruption. For those with concerns or questions about their mail, the USPS directed customers to their customer service line at 1-800-ASK-USPS. Although the incident briefly disrupted traffic, the efficient response from both law enforcement and postal workers helped minimize the overall impact, ensuring the situation was resolved quickly.

Bills Proposed to Ban Sale of NC Military and Farming Land

to U.S. Adversaries

North Carolina lawmakers have introduced a series of bills aimed at protecting the state's military and agricultural land from being sold to foreign adversaries. The bills, which are currently under review, would prohibit individuals or entities from purchasing land in North Carolina that is either located near military bases or has significant agricultural value if the buyer is from a country considered a national security threat to the United States.

The proposed legislation comes amid growing concerns about foreign influence and the potential for adversaries, particularly China and Russia, to acquire strategically important land. Supporters of the bills argue that limiting the sale of such land is essential to safeguarding national security, protecting local farmers, and maintaining military readiness.

If passed, the bills would empower state authorities to review and block land transactions involving foreign nationals from specific countries. This move has received bipartisan support from state lawmakers, although some critics caution that the law could have unintended consequences for foreign investments in the state’s economy.

The bills are expected to undergo further debate in the coming weeks as lawmakers assess the potential impact on landowners, the agricultural industry, and state security.

Copperheads Are Out!

As temperatures warm up in North Carolina, it's the time of year when copperhead snakes become more active. The copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix), the state’s most common venomous snake, is known for its distinctive appearance—featuring hourglass-shaped markings on a light brown or gray body. While copperheads are typically found in wooded areas, they can also be spotted in suburban neighborhoods and even around homes.

Copperheads prefer habitats like forests, fields, and areas with dense vegetation. They are ambush predators, hunting small mammals, birds, and insects. Though copperheads are generally not aggressive, they may strike if they feel threatened. Their venomous bites are painful but rarely fatal to humans.

To stay safe during copperhead season, it’s important to remain vigilant, especially in areas with tall grass, piles of leaves, or woodpiles. Wearing over-the-ankle boots and long pants can help protect against bites. If you're walking in snake-prone areas, tapping a stick ahead of you can alert the snake to your presence. And if you do encounter a copperhead, keep your distance and avoid provoking it.

By taking these precautions, you can reduce the risk of an unfortunate encounter with this common North Carolina snake.

The Sweet Power of Anise: Essential Oil Benefits You’ll Love

With its warm, sweet, and spicy aroma, Anise essential oil is more than just a kitchen staple—it’s a natural powerhouse with a wide range of health and wellness benefits. Derived from the seeds of the Pimpinella anisum plant, anise oil has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, and it’s still a favorite in aromatherapy and natural healing today.

🌿 Digestive Support

One of the most well-known benefits of anise essential oil is its ability to soothe the digestive system. It can help reduce bloating, gas, indigestion, and even mild cramping. Many natural remedies for upset stomachs or colic contain anise due to its gentle but effective action on the gut.

🌬️ Respiratory Relief

Anise oil’s expectorant properties make it helpful for relieving congestion, coughs, and colds. When diffused or added to a steam inhalation, it can help clear the airways and ease breathing—especially helpful during allergy season or when battling a seasonal bug.

🌸 Hormonal Balance & Menstrual Relief

Traditionally, anise oil has been used to help support women’s health. It may help ease menstrual discomfort and balance mood swings due to its mild estrogen-like properties. It’s often included in massage blends for this reason.

😌 Calming and Uplifting

Anise essential oil has a mildly sedative effect and can help calm nerves and reduce stress. Its sweet scent is often used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation, improve mood, and encourage restful sleep.

🛡️ Antimicrobial and Antifungal

Thanks to its natural antimicrobial compounds, anise oil can help purify the air and surfaces. It’s also sometimes used in natural cleaning solutions or diluted for topical use to address minor skin irritations.

How to Use It:

  • Aromatherapy: Add a few drops to a diffuser to ease stress and clear the air.

  • Massage Oil: Dilute with a carrier oil for digestive or menstrual relief.

  • Steam Inhalation: Use in hot water to relieve sinus and chest congestion.

Note: Anise essential oil is potent. Always dilute before topical use and consult with a healthcare provider if you’re pregnant, nursing, or managing medical conditions.

Sweet, spicy, and full of natural benefits, Anise essential oil is a comforting addition to any holistic wellness routine. Whether you’re looking to soothe the body, lift the mind, or simply enjoy its nostalgic scent, this little bottle of herbal magic is a time-tested treasure.
