Visiting Queen City

Charlotte, North Carolina — affectionately known as the Queen City 👑 — is a dynamic blend of Southern charm, rich history, and modern energy. Named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III, the city was founded in 1768 and proudly claims to be the site of the first declaration of independence from British rule with the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in 1775 🇺🇸. Whether or not the tale is true, it’s a point of pride for Charlotteans. The city boomed in the textile industry during the 19th century and later became a banking powerhouse 💰 — it’s now home to Bank of America and a major hub for Wells Fargo, making it one of the largest financial centers in the country.

There’s no shortage of things to see and do in Charlotte 🎉. Start your adventure at the NASCAR Hall of Fame 🏁, a must-visit for racing enthusiasts, complete with simulators and iconic cars. Art lovers can get lost in the Mint Museum 🎨, North Carolina’s oldest art museum, filled with American, contemporary, and global collections. For a breath of fresh air, take a stroll through Freedom Park 🌳, a peaceful 98-acre space with trails, a lake, and picnic spots. Families and thrill-seekers alike will love Carowinds 🎢, an amusement park that straddles the North and South Carolina border. Sports fans, you're in luck — catch a Carolina Panthers 🏈 game at Bank of America Stadium or cheer on the Charlotte Hornets 🏀 at the Spectrum Center.

Foodies will fall in love with Charlotte’s diverse and delicious culinary scene 😋. Sample Southern classics like barbecue 🍖, shrimp and grits 🍤, fried green tomatoes, and pimento cheese, all washed down with a tall glass of sweet tea 🍹. And if you're into craft beer, Charlotte’s got you covered — with over 40 breweries 🍺, spots like NoDa Brewing, Olde Mecklenburg, and Sycamore Brewing are perfect for a relaxing afternoon or evening out.

Neighborhoods in Charlotte each offer their own personality. Uptown 🌆 is the bustling business and entertainment district; NoDa 🎭 (North Davidson) is a creative arts hub with murals, galleries, and live music; South End 🚉 is trendy, packed with breweries, art, and access to the Rail Trail; and Plaza Midwood 🎷 is funky, diverse, and full of local charm with vintage shops and eclectic eateries.

Another cool place to check out is the Carolinas Aviation Museum ✈️, where you can see the real plane from the “Miracle on the Hudson” landing. And getting to Charlotte is easy — its airport is one of the busiest in the world 🌍, making it a traveler's dream.

Whether you're exploring its fascinating past, enjoying outdoor adventures, indulging in incredible food, or just soaking in the friendly vibe, Charlotte is a city that’s easy to love ❤️. From its humble roots to its sky-high ambitions, the Queen City welcomes you with open arms.

What’s Happening in Wake County?

Invasive Fish Spreading Rapidly in North Carolina

An invasive fish species, the Alabama bass, first detected in Lake Norman, is rapidly spreading across North Carolina, threatening native fish populations. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) has confirmed the species’ presence in several local lakes, including Lake Hickory, Lake Wylie, and the Yadkin River.

Alabama bass, native to the Mobile River Basin in Alabama and Mississippi, can hybridize with spotted bass, weakening the genetic diversity of local fish species. Experts believe the fish were introduced illegally into the state's waters, and their spread poses risks to both the local ecosystem and the fishing industry.

The NCWRC is urging anglers to report any sightings of Alabama bass and avoid returning them to the water to help slow their spread. For more details, anglers can visit the NCWRC website or contact local wildlife authorities.

NC Supreme Court Rules on Contested 2024 Election Ballots

The North Carolina Supreme Court recently ruled on the contested ballots from the 2024 race for a seat on the state’s highest court. While some 65,000 ballots were challenged, the court decided to count the majority, citing errors by election officials rather than voters’ faults. However, about 5,700 ballots from military and overseas voters lacking proper ID will be reviewed, with potential invalidation if documentation isn’t provided.

Additionally, around 200 ballots from non-resident voters were disqualified. Justice Anita Earls dissented, arguing the ruling could undermine democratic principles.

The decision marks the latest twist in the tight race between incumbent Justice Allison Riggs and challenger Judge Jefferson Griffin. Legal battles are ongoing, and the outcome could significantly impact the court's composition.

This Week’s Restaurant in the Spotlight is:

🍝 A Taste of Italy in Garner: Garibaldi Trattoria Pizza & Pasta

If you’ve been searching for a cozy, authentic Italian restaurant in Garner, North Carolina, Garibaldi Trattoria Pizza & Pasta might just be your new favorite spot. Tucked away on Son-Lan Parkway, this charming eatery delivers the kind of comforting, flavorful experience that feels like a warm hug from Nonna herself.

From the moment you step inside, Garibaldi wraps you in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. The décor is simple and warm, with just the right touch of rustic elegance. It's the kind of place that works just as well for a casual lunch as it does for a special dinner out.

But let’s talk about the food — because that’s where Garibaldi really shines. The menu is full of Italian classics, and everything is made with care. The Margherita pizza is a standout — thin, crispy crust, rich tomato sauce made from San Marzano tomatoes, and melted mozzarella that stretches just right. It’s fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced.

Pasta dishes are equally impressive. The Lasagna is a customer favorite, layered with rich meat sauce, creamy cheese, and tender pasta. The Chicken Parmigiana arrives golden, crispy, and smothered in tangy marinara — it’s the kind of dish that makes you want to close your eyes and savor every bite.

Don’t skip the appetizers and desserts either. The French onion soup is deeply savory and cheesy, and the cannoli? Crisp shell, sweet ricotta filling — absolutely worth saving room for.

The service is friendly and attentive, and the staff genuinely seem to care that you’re enjoying yourself. It’s one of those rare places where you feel like a regular, even if it’s your first visit.

Garibaldi Trattoria is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday until 10 p.m. They also offer online ordering for takeout, which is perfect if you want a great meal at home.

So whether you're craving comfort food on a rainy day or planning a relaxed dinner out with friends, Garibaldi Trattoria Pizza & Pasta brings a little piece of Italy to Garner — and it does it beautifully. Bellissimo! 🇮🇹✨
