Carolina Tiger Rescue
A Sanctuary for Wild Cats in Pittsboro, North Carolina
Located in Pittsboro, North Carolina, Carolina Tiger Rescue is a dedicated wildlife sanctuary that focuses on rescuing and providing lifetime care for wild cats. The sanctuary is home to a variety of species, including tigers, lions, cougars, leopards, servals, bobcats, and more.
Carolina Tiger Rescue was founded in 1973 by Dr. Michael Bleyman, a geneticist at the University of North Carolina. Initially known as the Carnivore Evolutionary Research Institute, the organization was created to study and preserve endangered carnivores. In 1981, the name changed to Carnivore Preservation Trust, with a focus on breeding programs for animals like servals, ocelots, and binturongs.
However, by 2000, the organization shifted its focus entirely to rescue operations, ceasing breeding efforts and aligning more closely with global conservation goals. In 2009, the organization was renamed Carolina Tiger Rescue to reflect its commitment to rescuing wild cats from exploitation and providing them with lifelong care.
Carolina Tiger Rescue is known for rescuing wild cats from poor living conditions, such as private ownership, inadequate facilities, and exploitative situations. One notable rescue occurred in 2009, when the sanctuary rescued Apache and Nitro, two tigers, and Elvis, a serval, from a junkyard in Kansas after a lion there attacked a person. These animals were safely relocated to Carolina Tiger Rescue, where they received care and attention in a safe and natural environment.
Visitors to Carolina Tiger Rescue can enjoy guided tours, where they can learn about the sanctuary’s animals, the importance of conservation, and the organization's rescue efforts. Tours are available on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, but reservations are required, as the sanctuary does not accept walk-in visitors.

The Five Biggest Differences
When Buying a Home In NC VS Other States
Due Diligence Fee (Unique to NC) 🏡💰
In North Carolina, buyers pay a non-refundable due diligence fee directly to the seller when an offer is accepted. This goes towards your down payment! This gives buyers the right to inspect the home and back out for any reason—but the seller keeps the fee. Many states allow inspection contingencies instead, where buyers can negotiate repairs or walk away without financial loss. It sounds scary, but I will walk you through it!
NC is a Closing Attorney State ⚖️🏡
Unlike many states where title companies handle closings, North Carolina requires a licensed real estate attorney to conduct the closing. The attorney ensures the title is clear, manages the funds, and records the deed with the county.
Property Taxes Are Lower than Many Other States 📉🏠
Compared to states like New York, California, or Florida, North Carolina has relatively low property taxes. However, tax rates can vary by county and even by city within Wake County.
The Offer Process is Different (No Standard Contingency Periods) ✍️🔎
Many states use an earnest money deposit and allow buyers to back out for specific reasons during a set contingency period. In NC, the due diligence period replaces standard contingencies, meaning buyers must complete inspections before the deadline without the ability to renegotiate later unless the seller agrees.
Home Insurance Requirements Can Vary by Location 🌊🌪
While North Carolina doesn’t have the extreme hurricane risk of Florida, some areas closer to the coast or in flood zones may require separate wind and hail insurance. Be sure to check insurance costs early in the home-buying process!

Average Days on Market: 50 (slightly above Raleigh’s 45, based on slower turnover in newer developments)
Morrisville
Average Sales Price: $485,000 (Carolina Demography’s 5-year trend adjusted for 2025, near Cary’s pricing)
Average Cost per Square Foot: $240 (premium due to proximity to Research Triangle Park)

Rolesville
Average Sales Price: $450,000 (Carolina Demography’s 5-year trend, adjusted for 2025)
Average Cost per Square Foot: $220 (near county average, reflecting suburban growth)
Average Days on Market: 50 (aligned with Fuquay-Varina, estimated from Redfin data)
Notes
Tariff Impact: The Canadian lumber tariffs (up to ~40% combined) are starting to push costs up, particularly in towns with heavy new construction (e.g., Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina). This could add $5,000-$15,000 to new home prices by mid-2025, as discussed earlier.
Data Gaps: Smaller towns like Garner lack specific town-level breakdowns in recent reports, so I’ve prioritized the above. Garner’s stats likely mirror Knightdale’s ($410K, $205/sqft, 55 days) due to similar demographics.
Trends: Faster days on market (e.g., Cary, Morrisville) reflect high demand near employment hubs, while slower markets (e.g., Wendell, Zebulon) indicate less urgency or inventory.
This list is a snapshot based on the latest available data, adjusted for current economic factors like tariffs. For precise, real-time figures, local MLS data or a realtor’s report would be ideal, as these are aggregates and estimates tailored to your request.
North Carolina Reports Deadliest Flu Season in Over 15 Years
North Carolina is facing its most severe flu season in more than 15 years, with over 500 flu-related deaths reported as of early April, according to state health officials.
This year’s death toll has surpassed the 362 deaths recorded during the 2017-2018 flu season, which was previously the worst in recent memory. The majority of this season’s deaths—around 75%—have occurred in individuals aged 65 and older.
Health experts point to a combination of more aggressive flu strains and lower vaccination rates as key factors behind the spike. “We’re seeing the consequences of reduced immunity in the population,” said Dr. Zack Moore, North Carolina’s state epidemiologist.
Hospitals and urgent care centers across the state have been overwhelmed, with many facilities struggling to keep up with the demand for care. Emergency departments have reported a steady increase in patients suffering from flu-like symptoms, many of whom require hospitalization.
Officials continue to urge North Carolinians to get vaccinated, practice good hygiene, and stay home if they’re sick. While flu season may be nearing its end, public health experts warn that precautions remain critical to preventing further loss of life.
Two Dead in Apparent Murder-Suicide in Raleigh
A man and woman are dead following a suspected murder-suicide on Sumner Boulevard in Raleigh. Police responded to the scene around 3 p.m. Tuesday, where they found a man dead from a gunshot wound. A woman, critically injured, was taken to the hospital but later died on Wednesday morning.
Raleigh police believe the man shot the woman before turning the gun on himself. The incident appears to be domestic violence-related. Identities have not been released.
Authorities urge anyone facing domestic violence to seek help by calling 1-800-799-SAFE or dialing 911 in emergencies.

The Sweet Power of Anise: Essential Oil Benefits You’ll Love
With its warm, sweet, and spicy aroma, Anise essential oil is more than just a kitchen staple—it’s a natural powerhouse with a wide range of health and wellness benefits. Derived from the seeds of the Pimpinella anisum plant, anise oil has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, and it’s still a favorite in aromatherapy and natural healing today.
🌿 Digestive Support
One of the most well-known benefits of anise essential oil is its ability to soothe the digestive system. It can help reduce bloating, gas, indigestion, and even mild cramping. Many natural remedies for upset stomachs or colic contain anise due to its gentle but effective action on the gut.
🌬️ Respiratory Relief
Anise oil’s expectorant properties make it helpful for relieving congestion, coughs, and colds. When diffused or added to a steam inhalation, it can help clear the airways and ease breathing—especially helpful during allergy season or when battling a seasonal bug.
🌸 Hormonal Balance & Menstrual Relief
Traditionally, anise oil has been used to help support women’s health. It may help ease menstrual discomfort and balance mood swings due to its mild estrogen-like properties. It’s often included in massage blends for this reason.
😌 Calming and Uplifting
Anise essential oil has a mildly sedative effect and can help calm nerves and reduce stress. Its sweet scent is often used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation, improve mood, and encourage restful sleep.
🛡️ Antimicrobial and Antifungal
Thanks to its natural antimicrobial compounds, anise oil can help purify the air and surfaces. It’s also sometimes used in natural cleaning solutions or diluted for topical use to address minor skin irritations.
How to Use It:
Aromatherapy: Add a few drops to a diffuser to ease stress and clear the air.
Massage Oil: Dilute with a carrier oil for digestive or menstrual relief.
Steam Inhalation: Use in hot water to relieve sinus and chest congestion.
Note: Anise essential oil is potent. Always dilute before topical use and consult with a healthcare provider if you’re pregnant, nursing, or managing medical conditions.
Sweet, spicy, and full of natural benefits, Anise essential oil is a comforting addition to any holistic wellness routine. Whether you’re looking to soothe the body, lift the mind, or simply enjoy its nostalgic scent, this little bottle of herbal magic is a time-tested treasure.
