What’s Happening in Wake County?

Raleigh Eyes Citywide Food Composting

Turning Scraps into Sustainability

Raleigh may soon be taking a big step forward in its efforts to become a greener city—by turning table scraps into compost.

City leaders are currently weighing the benefits of introducing a municipal food composting program that would give residents a simple way to keep organic waste out of the landfill. The goal? Cut down on trash, reduce harmful emissions, and support healthy soil for local gardens and parks.

Imagine tossing your vegetable peels, coffee grounds, and leftovers into a special bin instead of the trash. Those scraps get collected with your weekly waste pickup, but instead of heading to a landfill, they’re transformed into rich compost that can be used to nourish plants and landscapes across the city.

That’s the basic concept behind the composting program Raleigh is considering. City officials are reviewing models used in other areas and are looking closely at how a similar system might work here.

Food waste is a major problem—nationally and locally. It’s estimated that up to 30% of what Raleigh residents throw away could be composted. When that waste ends up in the landfill, it produces methane gas, which is far more damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide.

“It’s not just about waste—it's about climate, health, and efficiency,” said one city spokesperson familiar with the proposal. “Composting is something everyday people can do that has a real impact.”

The timing also aligns with Raleigh’s broader sustainability goals, which include reducing the city's carbon footprint and making better use of its natural resources.

Raleigh has already dipped its toes into composting through small-scale programs at select schools, community gardens, and drop-off locations. These early efforts have been met with enthusiasm and have helped build momentum for something bigger.

A citywide rollout would include providing residents with small indoor bins for food scraps, as well as curbside collection containers. Educational outreach and how-to guides would help residents get on board without much hassle.

If all goes according to plan, a pilot program could launch in targeted neighborhoods by late 2025 or early 2026, with gradual expansion to other parts of the city.

In addition to cutting down on landfill use and emissions, composting has some real perks:

  • Healthier Soil: Compost adds nutrients to soil, helping gardens, trees, and parks thrive.

  • Lower Costs: Diverting waste can reduce the city’s landfill tipping fees and delay the need for new waste facilities.

  • Community Impact: Residents, schools, and local farmers could all benefit from access to quality compost.

As Raleigh continues exploring this option, residents can play a part by:

  • Learning about composting at home through local workshops or online guides.

  • Sharing feedback with city council members to show interest or raise questions.

  • Supporting local composting efforts already in place at farmers markets and community gardens.

Food composting isn’t just a trend—it’s a practical step toward a cleaner, smarter future. And if Raleigh gives it the green light, it might just inspire other cities across North Carolina to follow suit.

Wake County Protections for Transgender Students

Despite recent legal setbacks to federal Title IX changes, Wake County Public Schools are keeping gender identity in their anti-discrimination policies. The district confirmed that transgender students can continue using bathrooms that match their gender identity.

The move comes after some federal courts blocked the Biden administration’s expanded Title IX rules. Still, Wake County leaders say they’re committed to maintaining an inclusive environment for all students. School board chair Chris Heagarty noted that following existing legal guidance is important—not only for student rights but also to protect millions in federal funding.

The policy decision aligns with a 2020 federal court ruling that protects transgender students’ rights in schools across North Carolina. While some parents have voiced concerns, district officials say the goal remains clear: every student deserves a safe, respectful learning environment.

11th Annual Bone Suckin’ Sauce Peak City Pig Fest Fires Up Apex

Apex is turning up the heat once again with the return of one of the Triangle’s most mouth-watering traditions—the 11th Annual Bone Suckin’ Sauce Peak City Pig Fest, taking place April 11–12, 2025 in downtown Apex. Hosted by the Apex Sunrise Rotary Club, this free two-day festival promises a savory mix of barbecue, bluegrass, and family fun.

The Pig Fest isn’t just another food festival—it’s a sanctioned Kansas City Barbecue Society competition, drawing top BBQ pitmasters from across the country. Over 40 teams will fire up their smokers and battle it out for bragging rights and cash prizes in categories like pork ribs, pulled pork, chicken, and brisket.

Festivalgoers will be able to purchase championship-caliber BBQ straight from the competitors, or sample offerings from a wide range of food trucks and vendors.

The festivities begin Friday evening from 5:00–10:00 PM with a lively beer garden, live local music, and the ever-popular Rib-Eating Showdown between the Apex Police and Fire Departments—a crowd favorite that’s equal parts fun and fierce competition.

Saturday’s schedule runs from 11:00 AM–9:00 PM and is packed with entertainment, kids’ games, local crafts, and—of course—more BBQ. Families can enjoy a dedicated kids' area with bounce houses and interactive activities, while adults can browse artisan vendors or sit back and enjoy a lineup of live bands on stage.

And yes—there will be plenty of Bone Suckin’ Sauce to go around.

With downtown Apex construction still underway, parking may be a bit tight. Festival organizers encourage attendees to use the GoApex free bus service or take advantage of on-street parking around downtown. Designated accessible parking will be available at the Town Hall Community Center.

While the Pig Fest fills bellies, it also fills hearts. All proceeds benefit the Apex Sunrise Rotary Foundation, which supports local nonprofits, community projects, and global initiatives. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $100,000 for charitable causes.

Whether you're a barbecue connoisseur, a music lover, or just looking for a fun weekend with the family, the Peak City Pig Fest has something for everyone.

  • Ownership and Residency: The property must be owned and occupied as the homeowner’s primary residence for at least five years before January 1 of the year the application is submitted.

Eligible homeowners can receive a significant reduction in their property tax assessment. The relief is the greater of:

This Week’s Featured Essential Oil

The Sweet Power of Anise: Essential Oil Benefits You’ll Love

With its warm, sweet, and spicy aroma, Anise essential oil is more than just a kitchen staple—it’s a natural powerhouse with a wide range of health and wellness benefits. Derived from the seeds of the Pimpinella anisum plant, anise oil has been used for centuries in traditional medicine, and it’s still a favorite in aromatherapy and natural healing today.

🌿 Digestive Support

One of the most well-known benefits of anise essential oil is its ability to soothe the digestive system. It can help reduce bloating, gas, indigestion, and even mild cramping. Many natural remedies for upset stomachs or colic contain anise due to its gentle but effective action on the gut.

🌬️ Respiratory Relief

Anise oil’s expectorant properties make it helpful for relieving congestion, coughs, and colds. When diffused or added to a steam inhalation, it can help clear the airways and ease breathing—especially helpful during allergy season or when battling a seasonal bug.

🌸 Hormonal Balance & Menstrual Relief

Traditionally, anise oil has been used to help support women’s health. It may help ease menstrual discomfort and balance mood swings due to its mild estrogen-like properties. It’s often included in massage blends for this reason.

😌 Calming and Uplifting

Anise essential oil has a mildly sedative effect and can help calm nerves and reduce stress. Its sweet scent is often used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation, improve mood, and encourage restful sleep.

🛡️ Antimicrobial and Antifungal

Thanks to its natural antimicrobial compounds, anise oil can help purify the air and surfaces. It’s also sometimes used in natural cleaning solutions or diluted for topical use to address minor skin irritations.

How to Use It:

  • Aromatherapy: Add a few drops to a diffuser to ease stress and clear the air.

  • Massage Oil: Dilute with a carrier oil for digestive or menstrual relief.

  • Steam Inhalation: Use in hot water to relieve sinus and chest congestion.

Note: Anise essential oil is potent. Always dilute before topical use and consult with a healthcare provider if you’re pregnant, nursing, or managing medical conditions.

Sweet, spicy, and full of natural benefits, Anise essential oil is a comforting addition to any holistic wellness routine. Whether you’re looking to soothe the body, lift the mind, or simply enjoy its nostalgic scent, this little bottle of herbal magic is a time-tested treasure.
